ABstraXT is a Cambridge, Maryland based Hip-Hop/Rock band that has its own distinct sound by mixing Rock/Metal with True Hip-Hop style lyrics. The name ABstraXT comes from the word "abstract" meaning no direction. Although ABstraXT's main M.O. is Hip Hop/Rock, they follow no format in writing their music. ABstraXT uses what ever they feel is needed to get their point across including DJ Scratches/Samples/Live Guitars/Live Bass/Hip-Hop Lyrics/Harmonies and Live Drums all directed to an IN YOUR FACE style of music.
ABstraXT was formed in early May 2001 by five accomplished musicians, each of them known for their technical prowess and soulful approach to their chosen instrument. After recording multiple demos both at home and in New York City sessions began for their debut full length CD entitled “Bring The Pain” in the fall of 2002.
While recording ABstraXT was steady promoting the band over the Internet and by word of mouth. This led to the band being offered a record deal with a New York based Entertainment Company. After many negotiations the band decided to turn down the deal and do things their way. This led to the creation of an Independant Record Label, DirtyShore Records, as well as a publishing company entitled Wrenched Ankle Publishing. A full line of merchandise was also created including T-shirts, hats, hoodies and other various items.
Upon its release in June 2003 there was already a sense that ABstraXT had stumbled upon something unique and beautiful. The CD’s title track had twice won First Place in Garageband.com’s Rap-Rock charts based on user reviews, was the track of the day on multiple occasions and was also awarded track of the week. Other tracks from the CD faired just as well. “Bring The Pain” has found it’s way to many foreign markets including Japan, England, Holland, Portugal, Brazil, Australia and many more.
“Bring The Pain” has earnered Critical Acclaim both in the U.S. as well as across the pond. StateofEmergency.com’s Liam Thompson had this to say:
“The structural foundations are strongly laid – allowing the record an attractive slow burning quality. This not only gives it longevity but also the listener will feel a real sense of discovery over and over again…….There is sincerity throughout this CD whether they are celebrating male bravado or soul searching.”
Over the next two years ABstraXT performed show after show all over the Mid-Atlantic region. Their live show more of an event and is full of high energy which draws the crowd in to make them feel as if they are part of the show. Effective marketing coupled with a live show that had them voted as one of the Best Bands to see live in 2004 ("Music Monthly Magazine") has helped them draw huge crowds and set attendance records at multiple venues. Other highlights during this period include having songs from their debut CD included on Three Extreme Sports DVD’s, recording a video for the title track “Bring The Pain”, achieving regular rotation airtime on numerous radio stations, opening for National Recording Artist’s Revelation Theory and King’s X, and most recently, having the North Carolina State University Wolfpack Football team use the song “Bring The Pain” for the basis of their Highlight film that preceded each home game during the 2005 College Football season.
Now, having released their latest CD entitled “Next Victim”, ABstraXT is looking forward to 2006 and beyond.
